Use truncation if you are not sure about the ending of your search term, or if you are looking for multiple terms that begin with the same root. Two symbols can be used for truncation: ? (question mark) and * (asterisk).
Truncation can only be used in a Keyword Search or Advanced Search; it cannot be used in a Browse Lists search.
Example: Searches For:
Guggenh? Guggenheim, Guggenheims, etc.
Libr* Library, Libraries, Librarians, etc.
Expen? Expense, Expensive, Expenditure, etc.
Tip: You should enter at least the first three letters of the word before you use truncation. Also, consider how many results your search is likely to return. For example, if you were searching for items dealing with college, it would be better to use the truncation colleg? rather than coll? since it would return many results that are not relevant (e.g. collection, colleague, collage).
Note: Truncation must be used at the end of the word, not in the middle, and cannot be used more than once in a search term. To signify missing letters in the middle of a word use wildcard symbols.
